All Vespas and Lambrettas with a manual gearshift rely and a twistgrip for the shifting. The twists are then transferred, either with two shift cables, or, in the case of the latest models, with a shift wire. These are hooked into the shift pulley in the headset and clamped at the gearbox end.

 The quality of the shifting mainly depends on the condition of the mechanical components. Worn out gear pulleys or low quality or worn gear cables have a huge influence on the quality of shifting. Gears which are not engaged properly will also cause jumping-out-of-gear. The load peaks caused by this may not only damage the gear cogs but possibly even the engine cases. Check all components relevant for shifting regularly, replace worn components in time.
