The voltage generated by an engine's alternator is subject to strong fluctuations. It depends on the load condition of the engine and the connected consumers. The different speed ranges at which such an alternator is operated result in very different output at the alternator's output. Nevertheless, lights, indicators, etc. should always work equally well. But too high a voltage can very quickly put the consumer out of action.

The SIP Performance by VAPE ignition can be operated as an alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) system. This is because the stator is designed to be "floating". AC or DC is determined by the connection of the cables. The decisive component for this is the box with the control electronics. We offer three versions:

The R56 voltage regulator

This voltage regulator is perfectly suited for a simple alternating current (AC) electrical system. Its function is limited to stabilising the voltage at 12V. The SIP Vape ignition, or its alternator, generates an alternating voltage. In this respect, it does not differ from all other Vespa and Lambretta alternators. If the alternator induces too much voltage at high speeds, this is diverted via a diode in the voltage regulator. Illuminants, flasher relay, horn etc. are not overloaded.

The two yellow cables of the 51008110 are simply connected in series into the positive cable. It is important to ensure that the voltage regulator has a good earth connection to the frame.

The rectifier R102

The rectifier converts the alternating voltage generated by the alternator into a direct voltage (DC). It also contains a voltage regulator that protects the vehicle electrical system from overload. By using this component in conjunction with the correct wiring, the mains of the entire scooter can be operated with direct current.

When using this rectifier, the current of the alternator is completely used to charge the battery. From there, the on-board network is then supplied with stable, powerful voltage. No matter whether the engine is running or not.

Those who connect SIP speedometers and other digital consumers, as well as those who want a high charging current for the battery, should choose this option. When using the DC version in conjunction with SIP tachometer, either the KOSO signal filter must be used for the rev pick-up or the brown cable of the SIP tachometer must be connected to the white cable of the SIP/VAPE CDI! The ignition pulse at the tachometer must be changed to 1 for DC and to 6 for AC.

The AC/DC regulator for the SIP Performance by VAPE ignition R54

While the other regulators can only offer either DC or AC, the SIP Performance voltage regulator R54 by Vape delivers both. The perfect treat for all tinkerers who work with a VAPE ignition. With the SIP Performance Voltage Regulator R54, you can freely design your wiring harness and its on-board electrics according to your own wishes. The combination of an AC and a DC output allows a variety of circuits and options for an individual voltage supply of the consumers. For example, you can continue to operate the headlights with alternating current and additionally supply a USB socket with direct current. Even a reversing camera can finally be realised with this.

If you want to customise your power management, the R54 is the right choice. However, the connection requires prior knowledge and initiative.

The assignment of the four cables: 

Brown = Ground

Yellow/Red = AC input from the ignition base plate

Red = DC output battery charge

Yellow = AC output

Important: The two AC contacts, the input and the output of the voltage regulator, must be bridged so that the voltage remains the same when the load fluctuates!
